Celestial wedding

Choosing a theme for your wedding is one way for you to showcase your personalities as a couple. There’s no wonder why Noora chose a celestial theme for her wedding. Noora, who’s name means, “Thing that shines” couldn’t have chosen a theme more true to herself. She is a firm believer in astrology and the celestial constellations always mesmerised her.

We based the theme around the Heavenly Waters constellations, which we used as the tables names. I used a palette of dark purples and midnight tones to depict the night sky and hand-stuck a Swarovski elements on each of the stars in the constellations. They turned out to be more beautiful than we imagined and shimmered on the tables at their evening reception at the Park Hyatt Dubai. Here’s one way to use shapes from the sky, like stars, moons and planets and make it look less school-project and more elegant. We used handmade  star shaped paper lanterns filled with fairy lights to decorate the Anniversary Piñata area where guest left wishes for the couple.

The couple wanted to originally have a wedding piñata, but also liked the idea of allowing guests to leave them little wish notes, couple advice and encouragement for their newly wedded life. So we blended the two ideas and created the wedding Anniversary Piñata, which was a beautiful star paper lantern with a laser cut design and customised wish notes that guests left special messages and dropped them into the star piñata. The couple will pop it open on their first wedding anniversary for some treasured memories.

Celestial inspired tips to bring your heavenly wedding theme together

Colours and decor

Choose the colours of night — blue, black, periwinkle, azure — and the colours of the planets — gold, yellow and silver. Use a lot of shimmer and sparkle in your decorations, with twinkly lights, candles and crystals, which look dazzling when coupled with dark colours in the background.

Celestial refers to the sky and heaven, so you are going to require some heavenly decorations and attire if you opt for a star and celestial wedding theme. Think along the lines of the songs “Catch a Falling Star” or “Starry, Starry Night.”

The Dress

A simple silhouette with elaborate beading is a beautiful choice for the ethereal look. Details like Swarovski crystals scattered to catch the light in your veil or skip the viel entirely and have a key accessory. Like a  dramatic astro-inspired headpiece, by Jennifer Behr, with stars both big and small adorning a precious wire comb. The petite stars look like they are naturally scattered throughout your hair. Use this hair jewel to embellish an updo or chignon.

Flowers

Use star-shaped flowers in your bouquets and centrepieces such as stephanotis, which is a small white star shaped flower that especially good when coupled with roses. Jasmine flowers are star-shaped and smell rich, exotic and sweet. Calcynia is a star shaped flower that is white with dark green leaves. This is a very delicate looking flower. Add some jewel elements of even have a bouquet entirely made of gems and jewelry.

Location

Stage your wedding or reception on a rooftop and take full advantage of the night and the mystery and beauty it has to offer. With a little advance planning why not set your wedding, if possible, on a night when there is a full moon.

Music

Play music that has a star theme such as “Aquarius” by the Fifth Dimension; “Bad Moon Rising” by Creedence Clearwater Revival; “Catch a Falling Star” and “Don’t Let the Stars Get in your Eyes” by Perry Como and “Starry, Starry Night” by Don McLean.
